Saloum House

Saloum House

A subduedly modern residence for a Middle Eastern man and his Filipina wife, the house is an amalgamation of each of the couple's unique origins. Its compact design from spatial organization and design philosophy revolve on the idea that the house represents the couple's marriage of two cultures; the Middle East of Dubai, and the far east of the Philippines. Its overriding form is of a floating volume continued from the archetype of Filipino vernacular architecture, also in continual reference to Filipino brutalism that takes full use of its sloping site topography. But its exterior envelope is of the breed of the Middle East, through its perforated decorative block facade that alludes to ancient houses that act as screen to the sun and for privacy. The house is a programmatic mixture of the two cultures not only it its aesthetic, but spatially as the spaces for living room and kitchen are sensitive to the Filipino family, as well as Middle Eastern culture with a small interior courtyard as is the ancient tradition of the region.
